So, today I put this together, to see how my art has improved over the year and three months that I’ve been drawing Walking on Broken Glass. I was trying to pick pages I remember being proud of, as well as trying to stick to regular comic art (as opposed to bonuses). This latter bit didn’t work out for June, 2011, because my only choices were the three-comic bonus arc or the cover to issue 3.

(And yes, December’s art is from a page you haven’t seen yet. Bwahahaha.)

It’s a little surreal to look at all this. On the one hand, I can see I’ve made leaps and bounds in character drawing. My characters are more streamlined, more consistent. I’ve definitely gotten better at coloring, especially now that I’ve figured out how I want to use the tools I’ve got in SAI. For example, I flat mostly with the brush tool now, as opposed to the marker tool, which is what gave issue 3 that unintentional washed-out look.

On the other hand, there’s a lot less detail than I started out with. This was in part necessary, because doing the hair like that alone added three hours to every page. It’s also because as time went on I feel into a more comfortable middle. I’m starting to figure out what kind of inking techniques I want to keep around (occasional small spot blacks, thicker lines in the shadows, etc), and I’m starting to get a really unified look pretty much as of issue 4 (the last two panels).

Basically, my art has gone in waves of good and…”learning” over the first few issues, but by constantly chipping away at it and constantly challenging myself with perspective and hands and silhouette, I’ve gotten better. It wasn’t always easy; there was a lot of pulling teeth to get here. But I’m starting to finally, finally be satisfied with what I’m looking at, consistently.

Also I’m glad I’m not using textures from Google Image Search anymore. Not only are some of those probably not cool to use (criiiiinge) but they look pretty bad, too (more cringe). Ah well, it’s a learning curve. You don’t have to do everything right the first time. :)

No doubt your art has improved a great deal just over the course of drawing the comic. I've seen the progression move to a much smoother and fluid set of lines, excellent *hints* of details that speak volumes without having to bog you down with the actual execution of them, and above all I think you can see in the artwork a growth in Confidence. The care you put in to the work shows, and I'm glad that you have shared it with the world. Keep it up! :D (That's what She said.)
